SOCIAL NETWORKS AND OUR HEALTH

MANY OF YOU SPEND A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF TIME ON SMARTPHONES AND OTHER TABLETS. WHO SAYS MOBILE INTERNET, SAYS SOCIAL NETWORKS.

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter,… are installed on our devices, but what do they represent?

Social network, what for?

From the youngest to the oldest, many people of  all generations  connect to social networks.

One of the main reasons for the success of this hobby is to be able to  communicate  instantly.

Sharing  content,  consuming it ,  getting information ,  discovering , meeting … are all attractive aspects of social networks.

Despite this apparently very positive enthusiasm, social networks have a considerable impact on our health.

The consequences on health

In a survey on an audience of 1,500 young people aged 14 to 24, by the  Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) , Shirley Cramer, general delegate of the RSPH, declares in her preamble that social networks are intrinsically linked to the  mental health .

Our health is however essential.

Spending hours connected to your virtual environment is not without consequences on our sleep time.

Self-esteem can also be affected as can our social bonds. Finally, a real addiction can also develop.

All of these health issues  should not be overlooked . There is a considerable list of adverse reactions  related to social media:

·       Cyber addiction  : Social networks can easily generate cyber addiction ( Internet addiction ) among users, which can lead to the isolation of the person.

·       Sedentary lifestyle  : Spending hours on our smartphones, computers and tablets disconnects us from the real world. Sedentary lifestyle (low energy expenditure due to little movement) then makes its appearance.

·       Cyberbullying  : The internet can also easily lead to the risk of being cyberbullied. Being ridiculed, insulted, harassed, or cyber-harassed is more and more common. The victim can be brought to close in on himself, to feel a deep sadness or even to develop a  depression .

Youth addiction

According to the results of our study, only 21% of Sharers spend  less than 4 hours a day on their smartphone .

We can therefore speak  of addiction  in the young population.

This addiction comes on top of  the rather worrying levels of  consumption among young adults when it comes to  tobacco , alcohol,  drugs , pornography and video games.

And you, do you think you are addicted to social networks?
